MERRY Christmas from Ironfiremen.com Headquarters

Following the tragic events of Christmas Eve, the Fire Service is in shock.  Having lost 2 Brothers in a senseless act of violence, it’s difficult for those of us on the job to be “merry” about anything.  Our hearts are heavy while our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of our fallen and injured.

photo from democratandchronicle.com

Firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczówka were killed by a sniper after  arriving at a house fire in West Webster, NY yesterday.

Firefighters Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter were also shot in the incident and remain hospitalized.

An on-duty Greece police officer John Ritter, was injured by shrapnel in the attacks as well.

The Fire Critic and Statter 911 has full and continuing coverage of the incident, arrangements and more over on their sites…

.

Coverage of Webster from Statter 911 HERE

I’ll share more of my thoughts on this issue, as well as the Sandy Hook incident when I feel it’s more appropriate. It’s been a difficult month for the Fire Service but we will recover.

So, I was on duty yesterday and the “good” part of my Christmas started then.

Rhett came by at shift break to exchange gifts.

He got me a custom made leather radio strap from Wolkpak Leather .

This strap is AWESOME!

The front says “Captain Wines” while the back says “IronFiremen.com”. The anti-sway strap even has “Buckaroo” stamped into it!

Wolfpak is the guys who made our custom suspenders as well. They also personalized those to include the Buckaroo’s name. These guys do GREAT work and it’s evident in their finished product. The fact that offer the option and that Rhett thought enough to include the extra stamping is AWESOME. It was the PERFECT gift!

In return, I got Rhett an APRON …. LOL..yea…. an APRON!

Not just any Apron mind ya …. I had him one custom made from Jamie Brads of Blue Ridge Rescue Suppliers .

It turned out AWESOME! It was WELL ABOVE my expectations.

The material is actually PBI (the same stuff our Turnout Gear is made of).

It has the reflective stripping just like our gear. The same buckles, snaps and even has pockets!

.

As much as Rhett LOVES cooking, this should make a great gift.

I even had em put our patch in the center (in case he gets lost at the grocery store).

If nothing else, he’ll stand out in the kitchen.

We’ve already had several folks ask where and how to get one. Even though this was a custom job, Jamie and I discussed the possible demand for them once we got some pictures out.

.

If you’re interested, use the link above (or just CLICK HERE ) and let Jamie know ….

So, I got off duty this morning and headed home.

As it turns out, I was better than I thought I had been and old Santa made a stop in Catawba!

This is where I received my best gifts of the season.

I arrived home to be surrounded by family.

The Buckaroo, my girls (Donna, Randi and Reba), my sister Marci (and Aaron) and even my mom and step father were in from North Carolina.

The stockings were hung and packages under the tree… it made for a peaceful morning.

The Buckaroo had a BLAST and that’s what it’s all about.

I hope that all of you had just a memorable Christmas as I did.

I hope that yours was spent with friends and family as well.

Thanks for all the well wishes, cards etc that we’ve received through the site, Face Book and even “snail mail” ….. it’s humbling.

For those of you who pulled a tour (or has to tomorrow) THANK YOU for the service. Thank you for covering the shift so that the rest of us can be at home, protected with our families.

We wrapped up the 2012 FireCritic / Ironfiremen 12 Days of Christmas Give-A-Way yesterday (we actually released the final winners this morning HERE). Congratulations to all of our winners and THANKS to our contributors!

The 2012 installments of the Ironfiremen.com’s Santa’s Sexy Helpers ends today. We worked our way up to see what ol Santa would find under the tree and I don’t think he was disappointed. Actually, I think Mrs Claus was also pretty happy.

Here is the final installment of Santa’s Sexy Helpers for 2012 … one for the guys and gals… ENJOY!

The Newtown, Connecticut murders and Firefighter Stress

I haven’t talked about the murders here on IronFiremen.com yet. Like many, I’m still trying to understand this horrific event. I’m not even sure what to say yet … what can you say?

I’ve watched a lot of the news and read several of the articles / stories. I was glad to see that tonight, at least some of the media got it right. Tonight, they quit interviewing kids and parents. They quit with the unbearable questions.

For what I’m sure will be a short lived period, they turned the cameras off the survivors / mourners and listed the names of those murdered.

To me, this should have been done much earlier (with respect to the families etc). I say that because the name of their murderer was up quickly. Every station had it up in bold. His name and picture.

I could care less about him. He’s not important to me. We will never know his motive or reasoning and there’s no reason to speculate. We can’t ask or beat it out of him. He took the cowards way out and died a much too easy death.

Here’s the thing … he will be remembered. His name and face was imprinted into our heads before we knew the victims. It’s still happening. They (mainstream media) are already posting his picture and making comparisons with other recent mass murderers ( Virginia Tech, Denver etc). His name could (and likely will) become more recognizable than his victims and that’s sad.

THAT’S WHO WE SHOULD BE REMEMBERING … THE VICTIMS.

Here are the names (and ages) of those we should remember. Don’t forget or lose them in the ensuing media circus ….

Mary Sherlach, 56; Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, 47; Lauren Rousseau, 30; Victoria Soto, 27; Olivia Engel, 6; Emilie Parker, 6; Rachel Davino, 29; Anne Marie Murphy, 25; Charlotte Bacon, 6; Daniel Barden, 7; Josephine Gay, 7; Ana Marquez-Greene, 6; Dylan Hockley, 6; Madeleine Hsu, 6; Catherine Hubbard, 6; Chase Kowalski, 7; Jesse Lewis, 6; James Mattioli, 6; Grace McDonnell, 7; Anne Marie Murphy, 52; Jack Pinto, 6; Noah Pozner, 6; Caroline Previdi, 6; Jessica Rekos, 6; Avielle Richman, 6; Benjamin Wheeler, 6; Allison Wyatt, 6.

I also hope the first responders are not lost or forgotten in the media’s search for “who” and “why”.

The Police, Fire and Rescue members who responded to the scene.

I don’t even want to imagine what they encountered. I can’t. Dave Statter had Police and Fire radio traffic up early. I’ll add the link …

 Sandy Hook radio traffic HERE

I’m certain their lives will be changed forever. I’ve thought of their pain everyday since the shootings.

.

What I haven’t seen or heard about yet is how those Brothers and Sisters are holding up.

I’m sure there are Counseling Units / Services on site and that they will remain for some time. I’m not sure it will be enough.

Again I’ll say that this was a life altering event / incident.

From what I can tell, Newtown is a relatively “small” town / community. It is the 5th largest “Town” in Connecticut at only 60.38 sq miles.

Newtown Connecticut web site HERE

Sandy Hook is a Borough within Newtown. It was the Sandy Hook Fire Station that was shown so much in the media coverage.

Early in the incident, the station was used as a staging / assembling area. I would imagine that like with most small town Departments, the station was a familiar, comforting place for the community.

Sandy Hook has 2 Stations, 8 pieces and over 60 members. I haven’t heard how many member’s children attended the elementary school if any.

Sandy Hook Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. web site

Please keep these Brothers and Sisters in your thoughts and prayers as well. I would imagine that the population of Sandy Hook and Newtown has tripled with the sudden influx of media etc. That means that the possibility exists for the call volume of Fire, Rescue and Police to increase as well. They could be busier now than ever before and at a time when they can least afford it.

While I’m on the subject, let me say that this season (Thanksgiving / Christmas) is typically the worst for us on the job.

For whatever reason, we seem to see a lot of fire in these months and we tend to see an increase in suicides as well.

It’s supposed to be a time for family. A time of peace and joy but that’s not always the reality we see out here in the streets.

We never get called out because something “good” is happening but, at this time of year; it’s maybe a little more difficult see and deal with.

FireChief.com is reporting that Firefighting is the second most stressful job in the Nation and I think this is our most stressful season.

READ Firefighting the Second-Most Stressful Job in the Nation, White Paper Reports

As Company Officers, it’s our responsibility to take care of our members and that includes AFTER the call. Make sure you understand and recognize the signs of stress. Also make sure your members know that they have a place to “go” … someone to confide in and “talk” to.

Fire critic vs Statter911 … deja vu!

It’s like I’m stuck inside the movie Ground Hog Day.

The Fire Critic / Statter 911 feud is heating up again. It’s the same old story … “ratings”, “hits” and now … Face book “likes” … GEESH!

The battle has been going on since Moby Dick was a tadpole. Rhett has always wanted to be crowned the “King of Blogs” .

Well apparently, my telling him he was “King” wasn’t enough. Well … if it was, it sure didn’t last long. Rhett ended up in the ER over it. The one good thing that came out of that whole ordeal was that we finally learned that deep down … way, WAY deep down … Dave Statter really cares about Rhett..

Back then, it was all about our blogs (web sites). Life was simple. A post here, another there. A good title was all you needed to draw traffic.

But, now that Face Book steers Social Media; it’s a lot more difficult. It’s time consuming and labor intensive. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an accepted part of the job. Fire Geezer is even working on legislation to make it “presumptive”.

It’s a dog eat dog world out here in Face Book / Blog land. The sad news is there are often causalities … people even catch feelings. There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors …. tricks played, slight of hand, set ups and more.

In the latest of events, Rhett (Fire Critic) has been pushing to surpass Statter in Face Book “Likes”. This is a measurable “status” that could actually indicate who’s indeed the “King of Blogs” (or of Face Book anyway). Here’s how it went down ….

Statter has been running a Give-A-Way on Face Book.

Dave is giving away 5 individual “Bricks” from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s   “Walk of Honor” !

It’s FREE and EASY to sign up!

You can enter to win through his Face Book Page (with hopes you’ll “Like” it while there) or by sending him an e-mail.

This is a never ending gift and an AWESOME gesture. You can never go wrong remembering our fallen or supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Rhett also has a Give-A-Way going. Well actually, Rhett and I are working together on the largest Give-A-Way in the history of Fire Service Blogs (that’s what we’re saying anyway …LOL)

We are giving away $$Thousands$$ of dollars worth of free “SWAG” over the 12 days of Christmas. There are winners EVERY DAY and  44 PRIZES to be handed out! If you haven’t registered yet, it’s NOT TOO LATE . It’s also FREE and EASY ….

CLICK HERE & Register to WIN

The 2012 Fire Critic / IronFiremen 12 Days of Christmas Give-A-Way has been a HUGE success!

You can see who our first WINNERS were by clicking HERE

It was the Give-A-Way that helped spur the growth on the Fire Critic’s Face Book Page . Mine has been growing as well (I’ve passed the 5,000 mark!!). Well Rhett was feeling his oats and made the statement that if the fans / readers helped him surpass Statter 911 in “likes” then we would give away a free leather fire helmet. Well, today he did it ….

Well, once again; it all got turned around on our beloved “Fire Boy”. That Dave Statter is smarter than he looks …. check out the latest video …..

LMAO … “T-Bone” … BaHahahahahahhahahahaha…

All kidding aside, both pages are great to follow (like) and it’s silly not to enter both Give-A-Ways. I hope ya got a chuckle out of this one. I’ll be back on Friday with the Day 2 WINNERS in the 12 Days of Christmas plus another installment of the 2012 IronFiremen.com’s Santa’s Sexy Helper!

Covering a shift …

It’s not as fun as it used to be …. I guess maybe because I’m getting older.

I’ll have to admit to being a creature of habit. I’m used to my station…. my rig …. my bed etc and when you “travel” or cover someone’s shift, everything is different (unless you cover in your own house).

Don’t forget to follow us on Face Book. Click  HERE  then “Like”

I worked for Rhett this past Saturday. His Captain is off on vacation and he needed to be out of town for family. With the Captain off, Rhett ( the Lt) moves up as the Officer so for him to now get the day off, he needed to find a Lt. or above to ride…. that’s where I came in.

Obviously, I don’t mind covering for Rhett but to be honest, the differences between stations had me “off my game” a bit.

The piece assigned to Station #3 is a “squirt” …. yea …. thanks Kalamazoo.

Before being transferred out here to “Lucky #13″ I was assigned to Station #3 so the rig and accommodations  are not all that unfamiliar to me.   There are quite a few differences though.

To begin with, because Rhett had been “riding the seat” I had to take the time to remove his booster seat before I could even put my gear on the rig ( LOL…. that was for you Statter )

All kidding aside …. our two rigs are very different so my “set up” has to change.

The seat belt is in a different location than I’m used to reaching for. My helmet, gloves etc are not where I’m accustomed to them sitting.

The run books, computer etc … everything is in a different location. You feel like you’re always looking or reaching for something that is normally within reach and 2nd nature for ya when you’re in your own piece.

The good news is that Station #3-A has a solid crew … a VERY solid crew. They took very good care of me and paid no attention to my fumbling around over in the Captain’s seat.

“Big” Dave Lucas was my driver for the day so I didn’t have to worry about getting to where we were headed or having water on the line.

Big “Luke” is squared away.

He used to be a Lieutenant ….  for a day or so anyway (our Lieutenants are our driver / operators and act as the Officer in the Captain’s absence).  He also was or is #1 on the lieutenants list … if there even is a list. Yea … I know … I’m confused as well.

You see, 2 years ago; Lucas tested out #1 on the Lieutenant’s list for promotions. One of my members, from #9-C ;  Scott “Coon” Boone tested out #2.

Our promotional testing consists of both a written test and extensive practical exercises. It is a very stressful and competitive process. It’s an accomplishment to land in the Top 10 of the scoring, much less 1 and 2.

Several promotions were made including 4 Lieutenant positions. Big Luke and Coon made it ! Well almost. A day or so after they were told they were promoted, our admin figured out that they had miscalculated our available positions. The promotions were taken back!   BOOMERANG  BUGLES !  GONE !

I posted about it on Engine 9′s Blog.. the “Melrose Misfits”  HERE .

(You can also find a picture of me without my mustache in that post … just like the Lt. bugles…GONE)

I also posted this video of Ernest T. Bass counting in an earlier post on that site….I still laugh every time I see it.

</p>

My point here is that Lucas is a good driver / operator and that made my ride at #3 much easier.

It’s a good thing too because we had a fairly busy tour.

The most excitement was catching “The Great JC Penny Mulch Fire of 2012″ and a mutual aid cooking fire out in the County.

We switched out the firefighters for the shift. I started out with Brad Harris ( coach for the Roanoke Rampage) and switched over to Eric “Wingnut” Mulford halfway through the tour.

Harris caught the cooking fire and Wingnut was riding on the mulch fire.

Both Harris and Mulford are Medics so they split the shift on the ambo. Harris rode the 2nd half on the ambulance and took a beating …. I’m suprised he didn’t just quit and walk out ;-)

Rhett was in Nashville, Tn visiting family and, every time he opened a beer; would call to check in on us.

I can’t believe he would call and frett us like that.

My regular followers know that there are a lot of things that I can tolerate but FRETTING is not one of them !

Unfortunately, this is the Fire Department and as we often say …. “it’s all on the big wheel” (meaning sooner or later …. it will roll back around to you).

And roll it did. Rhett and the family tried to head home yesterday afternoon.

Of course that put him on the interstate about the time all the snow hit. He ended up parked on the Northbound side of I-81 for about 5 hours. The good news is that they had plenty of gas and some movies to watch so they stayed warm and entertained. He eventually made it home… safe and sound.

I should have know he’d have trouble driving in the snow despite the fact that he’s a Yankee. We travel a lot together and every time he drives, it’s a gamble. He does GREAT in a fire truck but when he gets behind the wheel of the Blog Mobile … LOOK OUT.

Driving in the snow is not that difficult. Hell …. even the Buckaroo can do it ..

How many 3 year olds do you know that can drive better than Rhett?  LMAO.

So yea…  as you could see in the video …it snowed … and in FEBRUARY … imaging that!

We got about 8-10 inches at the house … not so much here in “The Noke”.

I have to admit that I LOVE snow and wish it had gotten butt deep to a giraffe.

Of course, snow adds a few more challenges to my life both on the farm and on the job.

That said … if it was easy … everybody would do it !

Farm challenges aren’t so bad ….

I’ve got the equipment  to handle it and my cows adapt pretty well.

I do often wonder what a Texas Longhorn is thinking while standing in the middle of a wet and cold Virginia snow…lol

Probably what “Rookie Randy” finds himself thinking most of the time … “why in the hell did I follow him to HERE ! ”   LMAO

Anyway, you folks seem to enjoy some of the farm and “Buckaroo” pics AND … everyone else has been posting their “snow pics” so I’ll add a few more of mine for your viewing pleasure.

The challenges a snow presents at the firehouse are obviously different but weren’t a factor today.

After all that snow yesterday, the temperatures today reached the mid 40′s so most of the white stuff went away.

It was a wet and heavy snow so we’ve been running “wires down” calls Department wide ALL DAY LONG! A couple of EMS and fire runs thrown into the mix but nothing exciting or worth reporting.

We are working the “Hell Cycle” this week ( Mon, Wed, Fri ) so I’ll be checking back in with posts kinda regular.

Sorry for the “random thoughts” and “rambling”  … it’s just the mind set I’m in tonight.

Thanks as always for following … I hope you continue to enjoy the site. I will mention that I love your feed back and comments and we’ve made it easier than ever for you to do so now.

WE DID IT !

Rhett (Lt Rhett Fleitz aka The Fire Critic) and I have been at this for a while now. We share common goals and a direction. We’ve always known that we would eventually “make it” somewhere … we just weren’t sure we’d end up exactly where we wanted to be (or if we even knew where that place was).

This past weekend, we reached a mile stone and I think we’ve found our place!

Rhett and I were honored to have been asked to speak at the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company’s Annual Awards Dinner. This was the first time Rhett and I have spoken together in a setting like this. It’s been a long time coming and, from the feed back we’ve received;  it appears we were a huge success.

Visit the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company on Face Book by clicking HERE

Our talk was basically “motivational” if you will. It was based on our core values .. Brotherhood, Pride, Honor, Respect and Tradition. We talk about these values a lot in our postings but also try to live by them in our day to day lives. We’ve never been quite sure who (if anyone) is listening.

For me, it’s sometimes difficult to articulate. For those of us who “get it”, it doesn’t need a lot of explaining. For others, I’m not sure how to make them understand. Rhett calls it “Owning the Job” while I’ve often used the phrase … wanting to “infect” you.

I think we were able to “infect” a few members in attendance Saturday night (actually, I know we did). With that said, for the most part; the members of the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company already “get it” .  They have a GREAT organization!

So, our talk; was almost a sort of validation as well. VALIDATION for them and us.

I had to have my shift covered. It was Rhett’s Birthday yet neither of us would have missed this opportunity. The opportunity to make and spread a positive image for the Fire Service. It’s worth missing something else for. It’s worth rearranging your schedule.  We’re passionate  about what we do and why we do it. We  hope to spread the feeling. We owe that to the men and women who built the Service we’ve always wanted to be a part of. This is by the way the GREATEST job in the world.

View The Fire Critic’s Face Book album for more pictures. Click HERE

The members of the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company welcomed us with open arms… we felt very much at ease and “at home”. We were after all with our Brothers and Sisters.

Just being asked was an HONOR for us …later in the ceremony, we would find ourselves once again humbled.

Rhett and I were both presented with custom plaques … THEY WERE AWESOME!

I still don’t have the words to describe it. This is the 1st time I’ve ever received something like this from outside my own Department. THANK YOU!

I’ll go back to the word “validation”. It’s gestures like this that make it all worth while. Maybe …JUST MAYBE .. Rhett and I are on the right track?

Read Rhett’s post by clicking HERE

I have a lot more to say but I’m gonna cut myself short. I’m typing as Rhett is driving (piloting) us up to New York City. We will be meeting up with Zach Green from MN8-FoxFire and have a very busy (and hopefully productive) week scheduled.

I’m most excited to be heading back out to FDNY’s Rescue 2. We have a fantastic gift in a donation towards their Mayday Fund which will directly benefit firefighters Weidmann and Gersbeck. THANKS TO EVERYONE  who purchased product or donated directly to this great cause. Obviously, we will have a lot more detail and pictures for ya over the next few days…. keep a check on both sites for updates.

Until we get back … stay SAFE and in House!

LOOKING BACK ON THE 30TH NFFF MEMORIAL WEEKEND

Rhett and I have returned home safely, but far from “whole”. I can’t help but feel as if we left a “piece” of us on those sacred grounds in Emmitsburg, Md. That, plus we brought twice has much home with us.

I don’t know how you could do what we did and see what we’ve seen and not take something away from the experience.

I will carry the memories we’ve made there for the rest of my life. Emmitsburg, the NFFF, our fallen and their survivors will stay with me always. I WILL NOT FORGET .

I would guess that most members on the job don’t know how much or exactly what it is that the NFFF ( National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation ) does. These folks are AMAZING!

Their work is not just about the Memorial Weekend. This team is on the job 24/7, 365 days of the year. First, the foundation works diligently to prevent and reduce the number of  Line Of Duty Deaths.  When an LODD does occur, they provide invaluable assistance to the Department(s) involved. They provided unbelievable resources and support programs for the  survivors (the family). Of course they developed and maintain the Memorial and they help the survivors attend the weekend services (all expenses paid). The Foundation offers many support services for the survivors year round as well as during Memorial Weekend (family day sessions, Fire Service Survivor Network, quarterly newsletters and even a scholarship program ).

Learn more about the NFFF and their Mission by clicking HERE .

“Our mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives. ”

photo by Lt. Rhett Fleitz (FireCritic.com)

A lot of the focus is understandably on the survivors … the family. That’s why I say every member on the job should attend these services. (read my previous post “Where Will You Be?” )

Better yet, you should become involved!

I report for duty every day knowing that it could be my last. It’s a huge comfort for me to know that an organization such as the NFFF will be there for my family and in so many ways should I loose my life in the Line of Duty.

We don’t like to think about it, much less talk about it but we need to. I have a wife, 2 daughters, a grandson (The Buckaroo), brothers, sisters, mother and father and even a few friends. Who will be there for them? Not just in the days or months following a loss but for years after … throughout their lives?

photo by Lt. Rhett Fleitz (FireCritic.com)

We often talk about “taking care of our own” but the NFFF actually does!

One of the really cool things to see at the weekend was how many past survivors make the return trip. For them, they say; it’s easy. They know it’s where they need to be.

I had the honor of listening to several past survivors talk about returning to help the new survivors. ”They” are the only ones who can truly understand what these folks are going through. Most explain how the support and services received from the NFFF made it possible for them to move forward with their lives. They further explain that now, it’s their “turn” or chance to do the same… to help a new survivor move forward.

I don’t think you’ll ever find better real life examples of  TRUE  BROTHERHOOD at any place other than the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial.

It’s not just the returning families either. Every volunteer on site this weekend (Honor Guard, Pipes and drums, Escourts, Command Staff, etc) was there out of honor and respect for the fallen. They were there for the survivors … doing their part and taking care of our own.

Again, I’ll briefly mention how amazing it was to see the logisitics of making this event even happen. The man power alone (volunteers) was overwhelming. Members of the Honor Guard came literally from all across the Country. We’re talking about 100′s of members. The Pipes and Drums are the same way and seem to continue growing each year. There are members “Escourts” assigned to the families from the moment they arrive. Transportation issues, food, lodging etc. It’s awe inspiring to see it all unfold without a glitch. STRONG WORK and WELL DONE to everyone involved in this years (the 30th annual) event.

As you most likely know, Rhett and I were there with Firefighter Netcast once again. Our job was a HUGE HONOR and humbling as well. As part of Fire Hero Radio, we had the priviledge of recording stories from the survivors. The families had the opportunity to sit down with us and talk about their lost loved ones… an “oral history” if you will.

They could talk about whatever they wanted. They needed (and we gave) very little direction. Sitting down in front of the mic seemed to be the hardest part because after they began talking, the stories poured out. WE LAUGHED AND CRIED! It was an honor for me to meet these folks and hear their stories first hand.

I will always remember every interview but some “stick out” more than others (for whatever reason). The Wheatley family was one of those interviews for me this year.

The Wheatleys are survivors of Fallen Firefighter Christopher Wheatley of Chicago’s Truck 2. That’s them pictured above left.

Video and coverage of this 2010 LODD from Dave Statter at Statter911.com

The Wheatleys are a great family. They spoke of how lucky they were to have had Christopher in their lives but I’d bet ya that he would argue the same about having a family such as his. This was one of those interviews where we both cried and laughed. Chris’ father didn’t want to participate. Chris’ mother and sister gave him no option. After he sat down, the stories began to flow. You could see the hurt but, even more so; the PRIDE in his  eyes as he spoke of his son.

photo from Chicagoareafire.com

They spoke of his younger years which molded the type of man Christopher grew up to be. About when Chris told them that he wanted to change course in collage and enroll in the Paramedic Program. He would later graduate at the top of his class. Something his father was very proud of seeing as how he (unlike every other member of that class) had no prior experience or background in Fire or EMS.

They talked of his years as a Paramedic on the mean streets of Chicago and of his bridge over to the Truck. The story evolved into  firehouse pranks, cooking, the comrodre and Brotherhood.

The talks soon moved toward his death and of how they knew it was for a greater reason. For them, looking back; it was almost as if it was meant to be (heaven needed another angel). You see, Chris had an attention for detail. He was killed on August 9, 2010 …8,9,10. After his death, the Chicago Fire Department received a new fire boat and named it The Christopher Wheatley. This boat was comissioned to be built 2years prior to Chris’ death in Wheatly, Ontario Canada. It seemed as though everything was in place and just as Chris would have wanted it.

Learn more about Chicago Fire Boat  The Christopher Wheatley by clicking HERE

When the interview was over, the family hugged us. I think it helped for whatever reason even if only in a small way.  The look on Christopher’s dad’s face had changed. I think that after the fact, he was glad his daughter insisted on his participation. That brings to mind part of a conversation from another interview / oral history where the word “closure” was mentioned.

It’s not “CLOSURE” the survivors are looking for … they want to NEVER FORGET.

They want to remember and they want us to remember. They don’t want the name, memory or honor of their loved ones forgotten. Again, that’s a big part of what the NFFF and the Memorial do. They help to honor and REMEMBER our fallen. It’s hoped that in the future, these interviews (oral history) will be incopirated into the memorial. One day, when you locate Christopher Wheatley’s name; you may be able to press a button and listen to this interview…an “oral history” of Christopher in his family’s own words …what they wanted us to know and “remember” about Christopher. More than just a name chissled in stone … what a great MEMORIAL that would be!

Special THANKS to the NFFF, Dave Statter, Rhett Fleitz and John Mitchel for their work on this very special project!

photo from the NFFF site

So that was our work day on Saturday… crying and laughing all day and WORTH EVERY MOMENT.

Afterwards, we would attend the candle light Service…. we cried some more.

Again, there is something even beyond spiritual at these events …. I hope that you all get the chance to experience it some day.

Dave Statter made sure that all of your favorite Blogs and Web Sites had the link for live streaming video coverage of the weekend.

I hope you were able to tune in and watch. I’d love to hear your comments … no matter what site you watched from. Drop us a note using the “comment” section here, via Face Book or just send me a quick E-mail (linked at the top of the page under “contact”)

After the Candle Light service, we headed out for dinner with a small group of friends.

That’s one of the good things about the “pack” we run in … hard work is often rewarded with good food and GREAT conversations amoung friends.

Where else could a “Misfit” like me have the chance to break bread and discuss fire service issues with the likes of Chief Billy Goldfedder, Chief Ty Dickerson, Chief Tiger Schmittendorf, Dave Statter, Rhett Fleitz, Pete Piringer, Greg Guise and more?

I am fortunite enough to get to sit with this group ( and others ) often and each time I find myself more humbled. All the top issues of todays fire service being discussed by our top leaders and me sitting there soaking it all in … AWESOME!

There were serveal topics, “happenings” and new “buzz words” that I have been sworn to secrecy over. I dare not mention them for fear of facing the drop of Statter’s mighty hammer … Bahahahahhahahahaha.

For those of you wondering … YES, I took another “stache shot” with me and Chief Billy G.

The thing is … he cheats!

The photo op always catches me off gaurd. Plus, just before the shot, Chif Billy always combs his stache and then pulls in his bottom lip!

LOL .. who am I kidding? Chief Billy’s stache has mine beat hands down and I can’t think of a better man to loose to.

CLICK to watch this video staring Chief Billy Goldfedder … ”How to Motivate a Rookie”

Rhett and I also have the opportunity to meet new friends while at these events. Some brand new, and others that we have only met through our sites, Face Book etc.

Pictured right is good friend and loyal Ironfiremen.com reader John Crist.

John and I met about a year ago on Face Book. His step son was planning to take the hiring test for my Department and was wondering about affordable, clean hotels. I told him  that his son was more than welcome to stay at my house. In the end, his son didn’t test but the offer I extended was more than enough to win John over as a friend and avid reader. It was good to get to meet John face to face.

This was another great “meet up”. The Brother to my right is Chief D. Wayne Garver. Chief Garver came up and introduced himself knowing I was from Roanoke. It turns out that the Chief also lived here in the Garden City section of town several years back… small world huh?

What’s he doing now? Ahhh he’s only the Fire Chief for Camp David. YEA …. THAT Camp David! WOW! Talk about a high profile position. What even cooler than that is the fact that the Chief presented me with a Challenge Coin. Yea … Presidential Seal, Camp David Challenge Coin! I wished we had be able to meet up afterwards over a few beers. He dropped some names of guys who are still around here in town. I bet I could have gotten some great fretting material  errrr stories.

Pictured with us is Chief Roseier from Howard County Md. Rhett and I have meet the Chief several times now and he always asks about one of the guys on the job here in “The Noke”. He and  Todd Releigh served together in Iraq (Camp Victory but in different capacities). Chief was 2nd in command of the base to which Todd was assigned as a firefighter. Being 2nd in command earned the Chief the title “Sheriff”.

Two GREAT guys whom it was an honor to meet! Thanks for the coin and conversation .. you guys stay safe and keep in touch. Here are a few more random pictures of friends and fans ….

Rhett and I had a good time and accomplished what we had set out to do … we worked on behalf of, honored and remembered our fallen Brothers and Sisters. It was a good trip. We are proud of our work and considered it an HONOR (Rhett even worked for the Foundation’s Social Media Team for a while while I was hired on at Team Statter).

We even managed to stay out of trouble …..ummmm …wellllll …errrrr …let me say it this way … we didn’t go to jail  LOL.

Statter had told us … “I don’t care what you two do … just don’t get caught doing it on campus”. The next thing I know, Executive Director Ron Siarnicki needed to talk to Rhett.

I was sweating bullets! It had something to do with security clearance. OMG ! What if Ron had found out that Rhett doesn’t really exist? See Statter videos HERE  and  HERE  for and explination.

Turns out “someone” (cough cough Rhett) had lost his ID badge.

A security breach of this magnitude obviously dictated the  Executive Director altering his schedule to return the badge. I mean what else could he possibly have to do on Memorial Weekend?

Needless to say, a nice “lecture” followed. I think Statter wet himself trying to hold back laughter.

In the end, everything worked out. The waether was beautiful and the services everything they should have been. It was standing room only but should have been packed. Start planning now to attend next year …. you wont be sorry. (usually the 1st or 2nd weekend in October)

Rhett has a good post up on the event along with links to hundreds of pictures.  View that post from Fire Critic HERE .

I’m back on duty today, working Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I’ll get another post up tonight or tomorrow … keep checking back.
