Barefooted … for now

I’ve been attempting another (this) post for several days now. I’ve written several and sent em to the recycle bin instead of posting. I didn’t want to seem (or come across) as angry and I felt like they did. So, like everything else here lately, I’ll try it again. My emotions lately are across the board.

Despite the overwhelming support I received following my last post (“A Firefighter’s Boots”), I was NOT able to return to duty and put mine (my boots) back on. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to … I DID … more than anything, and you folks were a HUGE part of the reason why.

The comments, e-mails, Face Book messages and phone calls were all nothing short of amazing! Then a good friend and brother Firefighter, Nate Camfiord; posted a picture of some bunker boots with a simple message … “for a friend”. Talk about “Honor”, “Pride” and “Respect” … Nate reeks of it.

He (Nate) then called Rhett and told him what he had posted and why. The two got their heads together and the next thing you know, hundreds of pictures of “Firefighter’s boots” were being posted and sent in! They came from EVERYWHERE…. it was an AWESOME display of support! I was humbled and brought to tears.

Some of the pictures had messages attached. Each touched me. Some were heart breaking yet healing at the same time. All were emotional, heart felt, honest and motivational. They all said, in one way or another; for me to put my boots back on and that each of you were not only willing to, but “THERE” to help me with the “fit”.

I had no idea! I knew the Brotherhood existed, I just didn’t know it did to this extent. I also figured out that all of you were grieving “for” and “with” me as well. I know that you all felt my pain…. I had hoped to spare ya from it. That was selfish of me.

I later learned that part of the healing process needed to be a sharing of that pain and grief and, that I have a huge family to do that with. We all do the same thing … we help others, even at our own sacrifice. You wanted to help me. To be beside me. To comfort me and share in my grief.  My being there would allow us all to move forward … to begin the healing process.

I wanted back in those boots this past Sunday. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but I was going to put them on. I wanted back in them for me and for you. I needed it…. we all did.

Obviously, it didn’t happen. I did however get by the station (and Station #5) for a visit that morning … I was glad I did. The circumstances surrounding why I didn’t work were beyond my control and I hope you folks weren’t disappointed. I hope I didn’t let you down.

We only get a couple days “funeral leave” in our system (one of which has to be the day of Last Rites) so I’ve had to take several days of “sick leave” since Jack’s death. I’m on the “old leave plan” so it’s no big deal for me. It doesn’t affect my Vacation or Holidays, I have plenty of it and, it will renew in July. I’ve earned it.

The problem I encountered was in our S.O.P’s (Standard Operating Procedures). Since I have taken more than 3 consecutive days “sick”, I need a doctor’s note before I can return to duty. One of our Deputy Chiefs reminded me of the policy when he called to “check on me” Friday evening and it’s a good thing he did (remind me that is). Can you imagine the turmoil it would have caused if I had shown up for duty without a permission slip doctors note?

It may have actually been for the best… I may have tried to come back too fast / soon. I’ve had a difficult week (emotional wise) and think that the couple extra days off couldn’t have hurt. They helped and the Chief of Department has told me to take all the time I need. I’ll get there…. I know it. With a support group like you, how could I not?

I’ll get a doctor’s note, even if I have to get Dr. Seuss himself to write one (he is a close personal friend and the only Doctor I REALLY trust you know…lol). My plan now is to return to duty on Tuesday the 29th or Thursday the 31st. Meanwhile, I’m going to start easing my way back to normal … my “new normal” anyway.

Zach Green and my MN8 FoxFire family will be in Daytona Beach Fla this week for the 2013 Fire-Rescue East convention … I’m going with them. Actually, I’m going to meet them there. Dad will be there too. They will be in booth #720 …. stop by and say hello.

A change of scenery, getting away (even if just for a couple of days) may be just what I need. It will also be a good opportunity to “reconnect”. I’ll be surrounded by firefighters, friends and family. It will be like easing back into the firehouse, only in a convention type setting.

It’s going to be difficult for me. I remain very emotional and it shows … that’s ok. I’m gonna cry in front of a lot of people this weekend. That’s ok too. I’ve learned that over these past 3 weeks. We’re HUMAN … I’m human. It’s what actually makes us good firemen. I’m going to start talking and “sharing” a lot… about opening up…. about talking (yea… to real live, other people). Sharing our stories, our feelings, our emotions. I’m going to tell ya how it’s ok to use E.A.P (Employee Assistance Programs), counselors and psychologists. IT WORKED FOR ME. If I can do it, anyone can.

I’m not “healed”. I’m not “over it” and I’m not “ok” BUT … I know that I will be. I know that I’ll learn to deal with and live with this pain… with this part of me that’s now missing.

If you’re in or going to be in Daytona for the show, look me up … I could use the company. Leave a comment here, message me on Face Book, hit up Rhett (Fire Critic) or just stop by booth #720 … Zach and Kelly will know where to find me. Heck, I may even put my boots back on while down there and give ya a free demo of FoxFire.

I’ll check back in from sunny Daytona (as soon as I stop and buy a new speedo). I just wanted to let you know (warn ya) that I’m on my way.  THANKS AGAIN for all of and the continued  SUPPORT…. I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Stay SAFE and in House!

A “Blast from the Past” .. the night before Christmas

Years ago, there was a web site around town here. The site was called the “Rumor Mill”. It was a little ahead of it’s time … it got a LOT of traffic. It caused a ton of controversy … the writers spoke of political issues, departmental woes and for the most part gave their opinion. Needless to say, feelings were hurt. Most every user on the site worked for or around here and all posted anonymously. Everyone tried to guess and figure out who “this” or “that” was but only the true authors really knew.

One of the Authors used the screen name “Doctor Seuss”. His postings rhymed and for the most part were often quite funny. I enjoyed and looked forward to his point of view and made it a point not to miss a post. Being on duty tonight got me thinking back to his rendition of  ”Twas a night before Christmas” . I found it and thought I’d share it with you folks ….** WARNING** it’s somewhat “adult” oriented …. here it is…

“T’was the night before Christmas and a week before the New Year.

I’m stuck at the station, thinking of midget girls in thigh highs, tall totties, nachos and cold beer.

My night boots and coat by the Engine with care,

With hopes that 3 dancing girls will soon be here.

The Engine crew all nestled and snug in their beds.

Softly inhaling the diesel soot lingering about their heads.

The Capt in his leather helmet and my do-rag in place,

The rookie unlocked the back door and pulled the blinds, …(wink wink) just in case.

Then box 69 hit and the red phone rang.

Off our butts, out of bed and to our feet we sprang.

We ran to the hole to slide to the bay.

But we couldn’t slide the pole, someone was in the way.

And what would you think to our old tired eyes would appear?

Yep! It was Jenna Jamison, 6 midget gals, a case of Crown, pack of bologna, a gallon of cool-aid, a bag of chips some french fried potatoes and a case of cold beer!

Oh what a show, Jenna and her 6 midgets… prancing and pole dancing each flexible, nimble and quick.

Our Lt screamed “ladder up boys” pulling at his crotch and licking his lips.

Jenna in a g-strings, thigh highs, and a pair of porn shoes with a 12 inch heel

I had to pinch myself, and ask the Captain .. Is this actually real?

He answered the question with a nod and a grin

He’d seen this show before although I’m not sure just where or when.

And just like ol Santa, Jenna brought a bag of toys

But she quickly warned “Elf operation” only… “stand back boys”

The vision of them playing, Jenna’s arched back, 44 trip D’s and a flat little belly

My mouth grew too dry to spit and there I stood, nervous and fresh out of K-Y jelly!

I used some quick goat thinking and called out her name

Jenna! Jenna! “Ever seen a naked fireman?” “Put me in the game!”

The show stopped there and they went to work on the job at hand

It’s Christmas night and packages need to be delivered all over this great land

So they filled our boots with goodies, snack foods, hot wings and beer

A blow up doll for “Goat breath” and a rubber toy for Scott Mutter, the station queer

When she finished unpacking and her work seemed done

She called to the midgets

“Pimp in distress!” Come on girls, “We’ve got another run!”

The doors slung open and they loaded into a quint

It happened so fast, I wasn’t sure which way they went.

But she keyed the radio as they drove from our sight

Bless you for working the Holidays!

Merry Christmas and have a SAFE NIGHT! ”

LMAO! Stay safe and in house…

C-SHIFT BACK ON DUTY

WOW! Man I’ve gotten a lot of comments on the new site. It seems as though a lot of you folks enjoy this stuff…ok..ok BOTH of you. Anyway, thanks for the support and comments. And yes, I will do my best to post every night I work. I missed Feb. 25th due to being off sick but, if I’m here and can…we’ll get something up. Tonight, we have a few special items / topics to hit. The first is sending out a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISH to someone near and dear to my heart.

What???? Who is that?? COME ON!! do you mean to tell me that you guys DON’T know Theodor S. Geisel? GIVE ME A BREAK! All you educated computer type people and you don’t know ‘ol Teddy? Let me help ya out…

YEP! Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss. Happy Birthday ol buddy! Most of you wont know what I’m talking about but a few local readers will remember an old site around here that stirred up quite a bit of controversy. The site was called the Rumor Mill and there were a lot of anonymous names made to publish posts concerning our department and the problems within. The site contained a little of everything. I believe it started out with good intentions but if you can believe it, some Firemen got carried away. Some post became more and more personal and wouldn’t you know it…feelings got hurt. Now, not all of the comments were lies or fabrications mind you… I guess sometimes the truth just hurt. Everyone knew it to be true….we just weren’t supposed to talk about it. Oh yea..it was embarrassing for other people to read about our problems. Like every other department in the country didn’t have a “this” or “that” guy or like they weren’t fighting the same battles we were. Guys… IT’S THE FIRE SERVICE… we all have the same problems. On different scales and with different addresses but it’s basically the same coast to coast. Anyhow, one of the Arthurs posted under the name “Dr. Seuss” and the post always rhymed. They were funny as CRAP! I had to get up every day and check to see if he had anything new up. I loved it! The story lines…the rhymes…heck even how he dressed. Oh yea.. a real dapper Dan he was with those suspenders, the hat…hummm.. WAIT JUST A MINUTE! I just figured out who he was….

LMAO….Wheezy??? I would have never guessed! Ok Ok enough shenanigans…on to today’s work. And yes.. I said work. It’s been fairly busy around here today. Sitting on 6 including 2 workers. Oh yea… we’ve been “DOING IT”! Nah… we did catch a small working fire with our brothers from E9, E5, L13, M9, RS1, BC2, RS1, ST2, and M101. A dryer on fire in the basement with a decent smoke condition. I had command while Coon and Tink-Tink sat on the hydrant. The boys from 9 did a good job and got it with the tank. L13 made the searches and did a little venting. Engine 5 took RIC while M9 assisted the Engine with fire attack. Working fire companies were turned around and we had her taken up pretty fast. Good clean work all the way around (I’ll get the audio up in the next day or so). We later caught a decent smoke condition on the 3rd floor of a 5 story Senior Citizen apartment building. Nothing more than burnt food but it was good to hump a few flights of stairs again. Then we caught a real barn burner! Oh yea… nothing like a high voltage power pole burning under ground when the roads are wet. Snakes, electricity and hookers with Adams Apples… I DON’T FOOL WITH ANY OF EM! Our local power company came in to knock that one out for us. We ran a few with our County neighbors down the road as well. You remember… the ones who live down at the “five star fire station”. I still can’t get used to those yellow fire trucks though…uggg. But hey! we’re running a local all girls college :-) yea… I still hate it here. Anyway, here’s a few pics…

I think I’ll shut her down for a while now. there’s some new cooking show on that me and boys want to catch before our sauna and manacures. Oh yea.. I almost forgot. I heard from our new Lieutenant Scott “Eugene” bradford tonight. He’s back in the Country and should fianally make a days work with us by Saturday the 6th. WELCOME HOME Eugene! I’ll leave you with a video tribute to our fallen brothers from 911. NEVER FORGET EM !!!
