Memorial Day 2010

The top pic is from FDNY 10 House. For those of you who don’t know, 10 House is located next to where the Twin Towers stood. Now I know Memorial Day is for honoring our veterans but since 2001, I always add a thought and prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters from 9/11/2001. Although they didn’t know it at the time, we were at war! See any similarities here?????

Again, I don’t want to take away from our Veterans. There is not enough gratitude and thanks for those who have and are serving to protect our freedom. My West Coast pal Schmoe has a GREAT post titled “Thanks George“. Please take the time to check it out. I’d like to take a slightly different approach and list the names of the 343 FDNY members who fell that September day. Here they are… NEVER FORGET!

10 House also has a nice page with the FDNY Memorial Wall. You can click pieces of the wall to view the engraved names of the 343. Check the wall out here.
I have a lot of other stuff to post about today (lake camping, float trips, professional Roper in town etc.) but don’t want to take away from our veterans or fallen. I’ll update ya with another long one next day. As for now, while you’re out enjoying the day and celebrating in whatever way, don’t forget those who gave us the opportunity to do so.
See ya Wednesday, stay safe and in house.

Memories…

Siting around reminiscing about old calls today…you know, the ones that really stick out in your mind. One of the many I have stored is back from my days as a “Melrose Misfit”. We ran an alarm at a facility that supplies, maintains and empties dumpsters. They have a large bay floor where they dump all their trucks so the garbage can be compacted and shipped off. Well, the call was around midnight and it was pitch dark. The ticket stated “fire alarm..water flow”. Well when we opened the door, it was like opening a flood gate only it wasn’t water running out… it was RATS! THOUSANDS of em. Ewwwwwww! Makes my skin crawl even today. The good news is that now that we are over here in “never never land” we don’t have to see much of that anymore. Even though we’re still in the city, so far; I only spotted 1 RAT and I found him just yesterday. I don’t know why but, for some reason; the “RAT” incident is stuck in my mind today. But hey, they’re everywhere…sometimes even in places where you’d never expect em. Anyhow, today’s our last before 4 day break. Kinda busy but ok. The morning started out with a trip down to the garage. Yea… I just love sitting down there out of service. I guess for some it’s almost like being back in kindergarten and going on a field trip but for me (especially for petty, minor BS or nothing at all)it can put lives at risk and wastes our department’s money and resources. The good news about today’s trip??? We weren’t broke after all and didn’t miss a run while being checked out. So we got back on the road and back to work. We were a man short today because Opie is still off and our local “Glow worms” aka Haz-mat team had a big drill out of town. Why do we call em “glow worms”? Well, they do play with all those nasty chemicals etc. plus…well they just look like a glow worm in their special little suits… See? Well, because of being a man down, we took a fill in from down at the “Deuce”. I gotta tell ya.. I love hearing a strong Brooklyn accent and Jim Mone aka “the Yank” has one. We also had another fill in of sorts in that we had a Medic student ride along. Kinda different from the norm today because our student works for our brothers out in the County. Here’s a shot of “Newman” I bet today was a lot different from his regular shifts in the County. He had to work with me for starters plus, we mowed the grass today. You see here in the city, WE mow our own grass. In the County, Parks and Rec come out and do it. Heck the County even pushes their snow in the winter..we get “West Va. backhoes”…SHOVELS (no offense Gherman) LOL. But hey, Newman jumped right in and never complained. Thanks for the good work today brother. DARN..there’s another RAT… a “cheese eating RAT” at that. What did I tell ya…they’re everywhere! Anyhow, we had yet another special guest today. Chris Price dropped in to update us on some local inspection work he’s doing in our 1st due. YES… Chris won his Grievance procedure and got his job back! Congratulations brother and welcome back! I mentioned we mowed the grass and after that, we did a little gardening and washed the rigs. The garden is looking really good…can’t wait for some of those fresh home…errrrrrr station grown tomatoes. The weather was beautiful but HOT so we flagged down the Deb’s Lemonade girl for some cool refreshments. We’ve caught a few runs, nothing major or overly exciting. I did get called “Doc Holiday” today which got me thinking of the movie Tombstone. Val Kilmer playing Doc is one of my favorite roles (2nd only to Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove of course). Kurt Russell also did a bang up job as Wyatt. I can quote most of the movie but like everyone, I have my favorite scenes. When I get mad, this one always comes to mind…
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0ndsXVaPwc]Here’s one of my favorite scenes of Doc as well…
http://www.youtube.com/get_player
Ok, enough cowboy movies stuff. To wrap things up here tonight I want to give a “shout out” to one of brothers over on that “other” coast. WAIT WAIT WAIT! “Shout out”? Hell, I’m about as redneck as they come. Let me give him a “Holler”! LOL. Anyway, it appears our west coast brothers did a little work today.. Schmoe has a
great Blog that I follow regularly. I have him linked over on the right side bar or check out todays post HERE. Trust me.. you be hooked! One of my favorite posts of his is from back in 2009. You gotta take the time to watch this video.

Would ya look at that!!! @#&%@!$%^*@$^#$##@* just where and when you least expect em…DAMN RATS.
That’s all folks.. we’re off on 4 day in the morning. See ya back here on Memorial Day for the dreaded Monday, Wednesday Friday cycle. Until then, you know what to do. Stay safe and in house. Oh yea..and look out for those RATS.

Busy busy middle day..

The weather today…not so predictable. Rain one minute, sunny and hot the next. What has been constant is the runs. Seems like we’ve been going all day. Nothing serious or too exciting, just busy work. We’ve taken care of the norm around the house and I’ve been chained to my desk working on performance evaluations…WoooHooo! Big Roy, the boys from Lucky #13, County Medic 1 and 2 more special visitors all dropped by for visits today. The County guys??? Well, little Brandon Sheppard wanted to show me “his” new medic truck (you may remember Brandon from a post back in our “misfit” days. Check it out here and be sure to read the comments as well). So anyway, yea; he’s real proud of his new ride. Said he thinks he just may ride her all the time. Why you ask?? Because it’s on a Dodge 5500 chassis just like the ol “Cowboy Cadillac”. And hey, let me tell ya; she’s a beaut! No kidding, this is a nice rig. Complete with 5 point racing harnesses in case a city guy has to drive em in one day… She even has a back up camera and GPS… Chief Campbell went all out this time… Here’s the side view.. Well, Brandon was itching for my approval so I gave it. I told him it was nice BUT…BUT it IS yellow and has one of those damn “woop woop” ambulance sirens. Again, some my remember from my “Misfit” days that I despise a “woop woop” siren..especially on a fire truck (read that post here). Well, Brandon was quick to inform me that she indeed has a “real” siren on her…. well kind of
http://www.youtube.com/get_player
LMAO!! That’s his cell phone ring tone through the PA. You just gotta love him! He says it works GREAT. Put 2 cars in the ditch just today as a matter of fact. Anyway, all kidding aside; it is a very nice truck. And, since we’re talking about “new” stuff, lets bring it back to the city for a minute. We caught a few runs with our brothers and sisters from down at the “Deuce” today. Those lads are sporting some of our new high pressure 5″ hose… ain’t that a purdy green???

And, so not to leave anyone out… Lucky 13 had some new “shoes” on today. Well, they had 1 anyway. You see, when our city garage takes the worn tires off garbage trucks, they mark the “good” ones for future Fire Department use… yea.. “that’s thinking with your dipstick Jimmy!”

And hey, speaking of “dipsticks” (no..I’m not gonna “insert Chief joke here”) it seems as if Pee-Wee and Brandon haven’t been “thinking” with but rather using their dipsticks. Oh yea… both are gonna be brand new Daddys! Pee-wee is expecting delivery in January while Brandon’s should arrive in November. I tell ya what…there is just something about that special “glow” around a pregnant gal

I’m so proud of the boys. I knew they had it in em. Now don’t get me wrong, it ain’t easy. It takes lots and lots of practice. Those little swimmers have to be in shape..

And, you and the swimmers have to know what you’re doing… one wrong turn and it’s a wasted trip..

The odds are actually against em…

But, in the end…it only takes one….

I’m hoping they have girls. Both farm on their days off and if they get to raising little farm gals the Buckaroo can have errrr..(cough cough) well never mind that..LOL… All kidding aside, congratulations to the both of them, I know they’ll make great fathers. We had a special visitor this evening as well. The County had a fire yesterday close to our area. The occupant has a 5 yr old son who had a little trouble sleeping in the home last night. The odor of smoke still lingered and just the normal intimidations / scares of seeing smoke pouring from your home and firefighters in full PPE going about their work. Anyway, mom brought him by our station this evening hoping we could talk with him a bit and hopefully ease his mind somewhat (not knowing the city / county difference because we’re so close to each other). Well, we did just that. By the end of his visit he wanted an application! I also made a call to Capt. Witt down at the County station that responded (County 1) and spoke to him about the situation. Capt Witt was more than willing to ride out to their house for a second visit with the youngster and an opportunity to check smoke detectors etc. Customer service and multi-jurisdictional cooperation at its finest! Here they are..

Well, that’s enough for tonight. We’re back again on Wednesday. Thanks again for following…stay safe and in the house.

What a mess!

It’s Saturday and C-shift is back on duty. Today has been another “one of those days”. It started out with the station EMPTY. I transfered to #13, Eugene went to #14 and was then redirected to #5, Coon then went to #14, Pee-wee had class, Joe banged out sick and Opie has the cycle off. So, station #3, Engine and Medic sat idle.

Engine 9 was out also as well as several other units. Needless to say, we were running at the bare minimal today. As for me, Lucky 13 wasn’t so bad. Their Lt “Georgie” Perdue was out sick but that left me with “Boots” and a new Rookie, Kyle Inman. Here’s a shot from the front of the bay door and another of Boots fixin up a little grub…

Of course the reason I was there in the first place??? Capt. Clayton was off to Swift water training today…AGAIN!!

How many days does it take to learn how to put on a pair of water wings? Hell, I’ll loan em my set if they’d just ask. I have the snorkel and mask too. Showed em off a little while back while on a field trip with our Women’s Auxiliary to Emerald Point NC.

Clayton and the guys get WAY too excited about this SWR stuff. Fancy little suits and helmets. Jet boats and even a gun that shoots rope. Hell, they don’t even own a snow mobile or a set of crampons. What are they gonna do this winter when all the water freezes? Huh? Never thought of that did they? Guess I’ll have to take the “bull by the horns” and form an Ice Rescue Team. Heck, somebody’s gonna have to be there to bail out all the little Scuba Steves this winter. “Scuba Steve”…LMAO.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezem3I7nfqM]
Of course, I think all this swift water / Scuba Steve stuff is just a cheap ploy to sell merchandise and pick up girls..

OK, OK, enough picking on the tadpoles. We also had a Heavy Vehicle Extrication class going on today..That’s where Pee-Wee was off to.

I attended one of those classes several years back down in NC so I know he’ll get a ton of good info out of it. So, moving on with the day, We finally got the Engine back in service about 16:00 this evening. Just in time to make one run and blow a radiator hose. YEA! Out of service some more. Eugene jacked her up, we got the hose off and I went down to the local auto parts store and bought a replacement. No easy task plus an altercation at the parts store…

The altercation? I took the medic truck to the parts store…and I’m in uniform. I was approached by a concerned citizen who proceeded to tell me how he wished he had a job where he could ride around and “shop” on the City’s dime. Then he figured it was “his dime” because he pays my salary and “I work for him”. Yea. I’m hot, tired, covered in grease and anti-freeze. NOT THE DAY to be drunk at the auto parts store. So, I then explained to him that the Medic was actually out of service because he wasn’t putting up enough “dimes” to have us at full staffing. I further explained that I was shopping to by parts to fix “his” firetruck with money out of MY POCKET…AND that me and the boys were repairing / replacing the part because again he isn’t putting out enough “dimes” to keep a mechanic on duty to do these types of things. I then invited him to come on up to the house and give my job a try. I’d bet my left errrrr well I’d bet a lot that he wouldn’t last a day and I know I can handle his. I haven’t had much practice opening checks from the mail or licking food stamps but I KNOW I can sit around all day and drink beer…. that I have practiced. Anyway, I got my 2 cents in and trumped his “dime” remaining calm and professional throughout. Oh but if I wasn’t in that Medic unit or in uniform. Ok, that’s enough for tonight…another long one I know but hey…what else you got to do? Oh yea.. one more quick pic. Our “substitute’ defence coach Big Brad Harris is sucking up the OT here tonight since Joe is out sick. Here’s Big Brad

Alright, we’re back on Monday… see ya then. Stay safe and in house.

Im singing…errrrr…training in the rain!

Ok, for those of you old enough to remember…here’s a little Gene Kelly from 1952″Singing in the rain”.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmc_gwpNQ6c]
Why put Gene Kelly on a Fire Department blog? Substitute “training” for “singing” and that’s what we were doing today. Training in the rain! Eugene even danced a little jig. The boys fussed a wee bit this morning when I told em we were heading out despite the weather. I tried to explain to em that sometimes…playing in the rain and water ain’t so bad. Of course I got the typical response.. “Oh yea Capt, like when”??? Ummmmm….

How about like when at a wet tee shirt contest! Huh? See? Oh yea! The bad news is that our day of getting soaked wasn’t near as fun as this looks. More educational I’m sure but not nearly as fun (cough cough .. as if I’ve actually been to a wet tee shirt contest or anything). And, a garden hose doesn’t do today’s weather justice either. Here in the “Noke”, it was “raining cats and dogs”….

LOL..now that’s one wet pus..errrr CAT. Truth be told, it actually wasn’t that bad today. The training division brought out a couple tents to give us a little cover and our PPE took care of the rest. Plus, when you’re actually training on something meaningful, things like the weather are a lot more tolerable. Special thanks to Lt. Hylton from the “Ocho” for putting the “Master stream” class together and to Lt. Mark Brown from #5 for putting on the practical portion. Our morning session was with our brothers from Ladder #2 and E5. Here are a bunch of pics…

We were sitting on a 36″ main with a static of 120 so we had plenty of available water. Eugene walked the boys through the nozzle atop our little “stick” thingy after the boys from the “Deuce” gave an overview of their bucket and it’s operations. Then, we put em in the air and moved a little water of our own.

We dismounted the deck gun from our engine and went over ground mounting operations. We also played with one of our 500 gpm Mercury Monitors.
I think Coon has decided he really likes Engine work because after we got him up in the bucket, he was hunting a way to get his “feets” back on the ground… look at the poor little fella peeking back down the ladder.

LOL…All in all, some good and valuable training. We went back for the afternoon session so that our brothers from #7 could get a look at our stick as well. We actually have 3 of these things in the City.. Engines 3, 4 and 14.
That’s about all the excitement we’ve had today. We’re sitting on about 4 or 5 runs, training, meals and the usual cleaning etc. Pee-Wee remains off on vacation and Opie was off to the hospital again “getting his learn on”. I hope to take it as easy as possible for the remainder of the shift. We start 4 day break in the morning, I’m tired and sore. The first 1/2 of the day yesterday was beautiful and I spent the majority of it on top of a good horse. I forget who was telling me about their wife reading / following the blog and how much she enjoyed the horses and cow and Buckaroo pics. Anyway, even though I can’t remember who it’s for, I’ll throw in a few shots I took from my phone yesterday… working cattle “old school”.

AND… so not to disapoint (i
n keeping my post loooong) I’ll leave ya with a little Old Crow Medicine Show…Wagon Wheel cause I’m in that kinda mood!
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yswz5MtGey0]
That’s it for tonight. We’ll be back on Saturday… same time, same place. Until then, stay safe and in da house. Thanks for reading!

Another beautiful Saturday in “Never Never Land”.

Ugggg the weather is BEAUTIFUL today and C-shift is pulling the tour. Brings to mind an earlier post titled “Anywhere but here” But in all reality, I’m more here today than I have been since January 16th. Yep… I broke down today and changed my helmet shield. It was difficult in 2 ways. First, I had to take off my #9. They disbanded the C-shift “misfits” back on Jan. 16, 2010 but I’ve been clinging to the memories. It’s hard to think that in just a few short days / weeks they’re closing her doors for good and combining with Station #5 in a brand new home down on Melrose. If you didn’t follow me here from the Misfit blog, check out their progress etc on the upcoming move. Take the time to browse through the posts, it was and remains a great blog / read. Check em out here. Their new table looks awesome! But anyway, it was hard to take the #9 off. Then, instead of ordering a new shield, I struggled with putting on my old one from the “old” #3. Old meaning the on that was located on 6th and Rorer. They closed that one down too along with “old” #1 to combine them into the new #1. Confusing huh? Check out these links for a short photo history of the stations… Station #1, Station #3. Anyway, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep the old shield separate or not. I’m not real sure why but, I put it on today.. maybe bringing a little more “history” and “tradition” into this house.. I’m not real sure but here’s the pics…

So there she is… the old #3 rides again. Ok, moving on, today has been a lot like last day in the fact that we’ve been short staffed. The Medic has been out all day while Opie was back in clinicals (he worked the ER today because he was drained from surgery last day). Eugene was off protecting our freedom. He’s a killer you know…
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR3LpriSmxM]
He keeps saying he’s in the Navy but he came in today wearing Army cloths…

He keeps saying something about being in the “sea bees” is why he wears cammo and not those cute little white suits like the rest of the “semen” wear. He is also adamant about riding on boats and stuff. Eugene on a boat…hummmmmmmm.

The funny thing is, we caught a run over to a local hotel today and seen a lot of “Army men” walking around. Well, I asked one of em and sure enough, they were from the local reserve unit that Eugene is attached to. Oh if we could have caught Eugene lounging by the pool while on “Reserve duty”. Turns out, the guys at the hotel were the guys in the unit from out of town. They said today was actually “family day” for the unit and that’s where they sit through a bunch of seminars and pass out medals. I even hear Eugene received one today…

LMAO! All kidding aside, Eugene is one of several guys who work for our Department and also pull time in the National Guard or Reserves. Just like our full time military personnel, these guys fight for our freedom and I appreciate it! Ok.. I’ll give Eugene a break now.. With just Me, Coon and Joe here today the Engine has been fairly busy. We even caught a little work today…. well, if you can call 3 trash cans burning “work”. In all fairness, those plastic “one arm bandit” cans put off some nasty black smoke when they burn. The call went out as a fire next to a building. We arrived with smoke showing from the rear…looked as if it may have been something. When we got around back, we found out it was just the cans and some rubbish. It was against the building but it was brick. A “can handle” for Engine 3 to say the least. Here’s a shot of Joe “doing it” and Coon “pulling levers” on E3.

We wound out the evening with some awesome mushroom, Bacon Swiss burgers on the grill. I have to admit…I was worried. Every time we…errrr I use this grill, dinner gets BURNT TO A CRISP. Don’t believe me??? Remember this post? LOL well anyway, I pre-stretched a line and everything this evening. I put foil down… you name it… I did NOT want another 2nd alarm here at the house. The good news is that it worked… ummmm ummmm..

To wind it down, I received a comment on the last post from an a
spiring firefighter in Tenn. named Beau Doss. Beau is in the “explorer” fire program in Franklin Tenn. Apparently, he has been inspired by my blogging here and from back in the “Melrose Misfits” days. He gave us both a “shout out” in his first post here. Good luck with your future plans Beau. Study hard.. keep your nose clean … and hit the gym EVERY DAY. I don’t know if your state uses the CPAT test or not but if they do, you’ll need to be in shape. Let us know if we can help in anyway, and thanks for reading. I’ll add his link to the right side bar. Ok, so that about wraps it up for tonight. We’re back on Monday with some “master stream” training and who knows what else. Stay safe and in house and I’ll see ya then.

Ever had that feeling?? Well I did this morning! This was the last thing I wanted to see in the last 14 days….

That’s the back door to the station….yea, I’m back to work. The house had that now unfamiliar odor of “structure fire” in it. It seems as though our brothers and sister from B-shift not only caught a decent job last night..they also beat 9 and 5 in! Got the pipe and made a good knock down! Solid work guys! Guess that will be our 1st due once 9 and 5 are combined and even farther away huh? Anyhow, we’re back on C-shift and right off the bat I told the boys that we were going to have to lay out a spot to put in a pool. I have gotten so accustomed to laying out by one that I wasn’t sure I’d know how to act or what to do today. What I do know is that I wish I were back in Florida. I’ve gotten tons of questions and comments today about the game and trip. Most people wanted to know about my encounter with the “girl” in those “hot pants” shorts and an adam’s apple….errr yea…. it wasn’t a girl. Some wanted the story on all the pics with the girls downtown (most everyone there thought I was somebody famous because I was surrounded by huge guys like kareem, Henley, Hardee etc. It musta looked like they were my body guards and even though nobody knew who I was, they wanted a picture with me)..LMAO! The rest of the questions today involved little Steven East’s safety. Well, let me assure you, I did NOT “deflower” nor corrupt Steven in any way…. OK… maybe a little. He bought a hat..

Anyways, we all had a BLAST. You local guys and gals should start making your plans NOW to attend our last game of the season down in Charlotte, NC. on June 5th. Ok, so I’m back to the grindstone today. Geesh. What a way to come back and start a cycle off. We were 2 short today because Pee-Wee is off on Holiday time and Opie was over at our Level 1 Trauma center helping em do a little open heart surgery. NO KIDDING! Opie was pulling some of his clinical time for EMT-I class and was assigned to the surgery floor. Brings to mind the 3 words that would make his momma sooooo proud… “paging Doctor Glidden!” LOL. Here’s our little brain surgeon as he returned from the “O.R.”

Funny thing is… I seem to remember the sight of blood making him …errrrrrr … well….it makes him…ahhhhh anyway…he don’t the sight of it.

Check out this post from our “Misfit” days to see for yourself.
LOL..I’m just kidding, Opie will do just fine as a Medic… I’ll just miss him as a Fireman :-) So, with him and Pee-Wee gone for the day, the Medic unit was out of service and we ran a 4 man Engine. Just like old times huh? The boys were pretty busy last cycle while I was away. Eugene musta really cracked the whip! Heck… they even had a 13 run day! That and stretched a line 8 times in a day! Oh yea…they were “doing it” baby! Well, Eugene got a little rest from being OIC today and got back in his comfort zone behind the wheel. Let me tell ya.. he went over the Engine with a fine tooth comb. He even went through the tool box and replaced the bent screw drivers. Rainy day… gotta have new wipers…

Then, he decided to put some new chrome beauty rings on the medic….

Now, I’m no mechanic but… Im pretty sure that they don’t go under THERE nor do you have to take all of that apart to get em on. But hey… it’s Eugene! Sad thing is…they’re STILL NOT on there! Guess that’s what being “thorough” gets ya huh? I think I’m gonna put him on the medicine we had Tyrone on..lol oh yea..speaking of Tyrone… he came out and did a little AC work for me while I was off…

Awwwwww just look at him in his little “air conditioner man” uniform. lol. Nah.. I never thought I’d say it but I miss the little fella. Ok, the rest of our day was spent doing a little garden work. Oh yea.. A-shift led the way and built us a nice raised bed for some home grown tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers and such… here’s the handy work..but remember..size doesn’t matter..

We settled in for a little “Moodle” training on the puters then went to the board to sharpen up for our upcoming “master stream” class

After the drill, we had an evening “cluster” with the big Chiefs. Ever wonder why they call em “Clusters”?? Hummmmmmm. Not a lot of new info outta that meeting but I did get one itsy bitsy nugget of info on an upcoming retirement earlier today….

Signed, dated and EVERYTHING… only thing is that I can’t tell whos thumb that is or show the other pics I have of him and the papers just yet. I promised to hold off but still wanted to give ya the “teaser”. To finish out the evening, Joe whipped up a very good Mexican lasagna follow by a trip to our favorite local milkshake shop…

Oppps….YEP that was my stomach gurgling.. better run! THIS IS GONNA BE CLOSE!! We’re back Saturday and Monday. Until then, stay safe and in house!

Another beautiful day in Orlando Fla. Geeeeesh! Guess I’m gonna have to put a pool in out by the barn. I wont know how to act tomorrow when I gotta get back to feeding etc. Most days here have been lazy ones by the pool…gonna be a hard habbit to break! Anyway, we’re checked out, lounging and awaiting our late evening flight home. Should be in the “Noke” by midnight or so. Again, I’ll say we all here are proud to have put it to the Gaurdians despite the final score. A comment was made on my last post as to the fields name and it was dead on… but hey, if you’re gonna get screwed, Florida is the place to get it LOL! Anyway, I thought I’d wrap up / update with a few pics from the trip and maybe even a little comment or two.. here we go…..
I posted on Phillip Johnson a post or two back and his first flight. Seems as though he’s settled in a bit…ya think???

We have another famous “Phillip” here as well in that of big Phil Dillon (our star center). Big Phil was the 1000th customer at one of the stores at the outlet mall and won a free bag. He still hasn’t caught on to that his wife paid for it and had the cashier set him up…funny as hell!!! Here’s phil and his free bag that his wife bought for him

LOL…. aint she a “beaut”??? Here’s a few shots of the guys and gals out by the pool doing what we’ve learned to do best….well to do good anyway

We’ve had a BLAST here… even Big Steven East

We even made some new friends… all the way from across the “pond”…that’s England for all you rednecks..lol

The night life??? WOW! It’s something about a cowboy hat, mustache and boots down here… we went to Disney last night.. the House of Blues…

I’m not bragging here but the gals lined up for pictures with us…yea..seriously!

I know, I know..they’re phone pics but here…I’m hanging with Jermain Hardee from the NFL, Sedrick and Kareem.. if I carried a camera around, I’d look like a tourist LOL. Big, small, short, tall we had em all….these guys know how to roll… here’s another little hottie I couldn’t keep off me (and didn’t want too)…LOL

Check out those sexy little “Hippo Slippers”. Grrrrrr. Oh yea… I also want to give a “shout out” to our trainers who also made the trip with us….ON THEIR OWN DIME. Here’s a shot of Gallon Morris but Jossie and Wayne Surface also made the trek but I didn’t get the shot… my bad

Again…thanks to all the players, friends and family and support members who made it down to support our effort. We can all hold our heads high! I feel as though we are now a team and will for sure be a force to reckon with anytime we are on the field! Special thanks to coach Bishop … for some reason, he chose me to be team Captain Yesterday and allowed me to go out for the coin toss etc. Sad to say, I called heads and “tails” came up… either way, it was AN HONOR! Thanks also to coach Price, Burnette and “fill in / injured reserve defensive coach” Brad Harris for doing a fine job! Congrats to back home coach Wheeling and his wife on the birth of their new baby.. we missed ya brother but Brad and the defense did ya proud! To close, heres a shot of Todd Stone… kicked back wearing Marci’s shoes

That’s enough until Thursday… I got farming, feeding etc to do until then. Thanks for checking in… for pulling the tours when we aint and for doing what you do. Be safe and stay in house… I’m OUTTA HERE!

We had a good game last night. If you look at the score board we lost but that’s not all together true either.

I have a few thoughts on this game / trip. 1.) I am so proud and impressed with our humble little team. 2.) I am NOT with the Orlando Gaurdians. Bear with me and allow me to tell a short story (…you know my idea of short). Anyway, I’ve said before that the fact that we were even able to take the field made us winners. I think it was early November 2009 when Todd and Chris decided to follow their dream and form a team. They then had to be in Vegas in mid- November to register a new team and attend a league meeting. We didn’t own a football. Our union.. Local 1132 stepped up and supported the concept. They got back, we were in and the snows came. Little to no practice. Later, we found another sponsor and an indoor facility. To this date, we haven’t hit a “sled”, or had any kind of “fundamental” training. Our first game was at home.. we looked (and were) lost. Second game.. not lost but disoriented. Last night, we had it together. Some of the guys and I were talking last night and I related it to being a fireman. For this game…we’ve been living together. We’re in Fla. living together in a hotel. Just like with firehouse life… we’ve become closer…brothers…team mates, and it showed. We made history down here. We scored our first offensive touch down! Actually, we score 3! (1 called back). 3 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries and multiple QB sacks! And the Gaurdians are past League / division Champions! Our defense has always been and continued to be hard hitting and impressive last night. The offense also came together last night. The line gave our QB an average of 4 seconds in the pocket! We moved the ball and worked the chain crew to their limit. “J-Rod” Fuhrman kicked a PAT (we’ve NEVER even practiced where / how to line up for that), we had some great punts and kick offs too. We kicked their butt for 4 quarters and I was proud to play for the Rampage last night. The sad news is that the final score board didn’t show it. It was 11 vs. 16 EVERY play (5 referees). The Gaurdians finally received a penalty with a couple minutes remaining in the 4th. We had TONS of flags and most were BS… (BULLSHIT). We got flags for Joey Pugh’s jersey number! He’s #69.. played tight end all night. We get a 40 yard pass play gain and all of the sudden, a flag is thrown because his number doesn’t allow for him to be a receiver?? WTF. Another 60 yard gain called back because a ref blew the whistle too early? We had 2 plays that were “re-played”?? I touchdown called back for no reason. We were getting horse collared, face masked, ear holed and trash talked etc with not flags. Hard to beat the team and refs. Now I know this will sound like “crying” but hey..you had to be here…WE WERE ROBBED! Orlando didn’t even pick us up at the airport! We were forced to get cabs and pay out of our pockets. They didn’t turn on the AC in our locker room. The temp was 93+ so we clustered outside under a shade tree. After the game… NO meal / party! They did send 4 guys out to a local bar who walked over and told us when a table came open. They had to ask for volunteers from the stands to run the chains. Did they NOT know we were coming??? And not from across town..all the way from Va. We had 3 times the fans in the stands than they did! Forget football….where’s the BROTHERHOOD? NOT IN FLORIDA! Past Champs my BUTT! Mickey Mouse if you ask me but hey..we are in Orlando. ANYWAY, congrats and hats off to our team, staff and support crew. We represented ourselves well! Ok, enough of this rant for now…I’m headed to the HD shop for a bike rental and riding to Daytona for the day! We head home tomorrow. Thanks again to all the brothers and sisters working a tour so we can be here. Stay safe and in house…

Orlando Sucks!

Yea… it’s sunny, not a cloud in the sky and hot! Nothing to do but lay around the pool. No cows to feed. No heifers to clip. No hay to be mowed or fields to be fertilized. I’M MISERABLE! LOL! All kidding aside, we’re having a blast and feel really good about our game tonight. Some of the guys dragged me into downtown last night for a little “catting around”….. geeshh! I think I danced with every gal in town and even one dude. I don’t think the people down here have ever seen a guy with a big mustache or wearing a cowboy hat. The good news was that I had several of the biggest guys from the team with me so they were able to provide a little security and keep crowd down to 5 at a time. Even here at the hotel the gals are getting wild. Captain Kent Macilhaney’s daughter Natilie struck a pose or two for the camera down by the pool…. here’s the shot…

She’s a looker! I’d say more but I have 2 daughters of my own and know better. Bottom line is I wanted to give a quick update to say all is well and we are all ok. We leave the hotel at 15:00 to play at 18:00 tonight. After party close to the hotel… a day off tomorrow and home on Monday. I’ll attempt more updates as time allows. Wish I was back home and working today with my brothers and sisters from C-shift…. NOT!!! Rather be laying my white tail right HERE…

Yea..that’s not only white but skinny and scary too! OK..I’m playing on the kick off team, the kick return, punt team and running tail back. I wanted some “play time” and here it is. Hope I can produce. Wish us luck..I’ll check in later. Thanks to all the brothers and sisters out there pulling the tour so we can be down here playing football for charity. Be safe and stay in house!

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED!

I wanted to give you all an update on the 13 day break. It’s been a good one so far and I’m looking forward to seeing her through. The title “The Eagle has landed” refers to our Roanoke Rampage Football team. We’ve landed in BEAUTIFUL Orlando Fla. to take on the Orlando Gaurdians tomorrow night. I don’t know, maybe I should have titled it the “buzzards” have landed (I’d have to consult Smurf to be 100% sure) but either way, we’re here..

The trip was good with no real problems. They only stripped searched the cops…(well almost). Apparently I set off a few flags in security. Yea.. I could have been butt naked but they stopped me. The security gal was not that hard on the eyes so when she said “Sir.. I need you to remove “this” piece of clothing and then “that” piece” etc.. I was going for naked! WoooooHoooo this is gonna be a good trip. We flew out of Richmond, Va this morning at 07:00 and landed safely by 08:40. A straight shot with good weather and no complications… here we are at the Orlando Airport..

Phillip Johnson most likely has had the best time of all. He finally got to meet a REAL…LIVE … flight attendant! Yea…he’s one of those Bedford County boys who has never flown. He said he’s heard of these “Angels of the Air” and seen em on TV but has yet to actually lay his eyes on one. Well, today his dream came true. You shouda seen him. Telling her stories of Bear hunting…trapping coons, possums and such. She was tickled! LOL Well, as excited as he was to see a flight attendant, wait until he sees the gals where we’re taking him tonight…

This outta be good LOL! Anyway, the weather is very nice but HOT. I must admit as well that Fla is nothing like Va. I haven’t seen a cow or horse yet! Heck…even the trees are different…. not an apple or acorn to be found

They don’t even cast a lot of shade??? Anyway, it’s different. The guys are kinda paying their own way here (hotel wise anyway) so most of us are sharing a room. I’m bunking with Stephen East from over at the “Ocho” (station #8 Southside). This was also Stephen’s first time on a plane. Stephen is a good guy. By that, I mean a “good guy” in all senses. I think he does well on the job but is also a VERY “straight forward” type person in life. He doesn’t drink…curse or raise a lot of hell per say (which is NOT a bad thing). The funny thing is that he’s rooming with ME! LOL. I’ll do my best not to scar him… here’s his pic.

Some of us had a short wait before we could check into our rooms but hey… you know firemen and cops can always find a spot to hang out…

Yea.. we’ll be ok. The hotel also has a very nice pool which I’ll be hitting in a few minutes. Probably no pics from there due to my ultra white skin. Anyways, the vacation has been going well. I’ve gotten some farm work done. The kids did a great job last week at the Central Va Livestock Show and Sale and will be up at Va. Tech again this weekend without me. Good luck to Taylor, Chigger, Kaitlyn and Jason. I know you’ll all do your best. I even managed to get a little time in on the river. OMG! NOTHING more relaxing than a lazy float down the river with a cooler full of cold beverages… I was scared to take the camera out in the canoe, but here’s a pre-launch shot..

I understand Eugene has been “cracking the whip” and getting the job done back at home. I hope they at least get the 5 inch tested. I also hope the boys are taking it easy on him and if you aren’t…. START! It’s just more paperwork for me when I come back LOL. Anyway, that’s about enough for now. I’ll try to update with team / game pics and/or an update of our mini-vacation if possible. We fly home Monday night and I’m back at work Thursday. If not before, I’ll see ya then. Until that time, stay safe and in house.
